| Asphalt Driveway Paving Costs Recent History of Asphalt Driveway Paving Costs The cost or price of asphalt driveway paving varies. Asphalt is an oil product that can fluctuate in price. Most recently in 2008, asphalt costs had spiked considerably. From the beginning of the paving season until the end, the price for asphalt jumped a whopping 50%. So the driveway paving cost also went through the roof. It seemed like there was no end in sight for a while there. It was about every other week or so the price would inch up another 5 to 7 percent. What made it worse was the stiff increase in fuel. Most all dump trucks and paving equipment run on diesel fuel. That contributed to the rising cost for installing a new asphalt driveway and made the price practically unrealistic. As of 2008, I have been in the asphalt paving industry for a little over 17 years and I have never seen the price jump this much. There have always been the steady yearly increases but that is well, understandable. Finally some good news now. It's now 2009 and another Connecticut and Massachusetts, New England paving season is getting underway. The price of asphalt and diesel fuel has actually dropped considerably. This also is a first for me to witness. I have never seen the price of asphalt go down. Ever. Who knows for certain how long it will stay down though. My advice, if you are thinking about paving with asphalt, don't talk about it, be about it. For all we know the price may increase again. For those that hope it may go down even more, well your guess is as good as mine. Right now the price is where it first started at the beginning of last season so I would be pleasantly surprised and quite frankly, SHOCKED, to see it drop below what it was at the beginning of 2008. So unless you are a gambler, I would suggest you buy now and buy right. Spend a little extra money now and "over kill" the specs of your driveway so you won't have to worry about paving your driveway again. But let us get back to what your driveway may cost you. What's in the Paving Price I receive a lot of e-mails and phone calls looking for a rough estimate or ballpark price for asphalt driveway paving. I really do not like giving any kind of price to someone on the phone or through an email without first taking measurements and completing an on site evaluation. There are so many variables to take into consideration when bidding on a paving project. There is not a set price like you would find when you go to a gas station to fuel up. If you have ever hired an electrician or a plumber you already know that these service professionals charge for materials and labor. Labor is usually priced by the hour. Asphalt is generally priced by the square foot or the square yard. On commercial asphalt paving projects, the costs are sometimes calculated by every ton installed. Asphalt paving is different. Asphalt paving contractors have a large amount of overhead. For those that don't know what overhead is, it is the cost to business owners to run a business. From paper clips and equipment to labor and insurances. Paving equipment and dump trucks are extremely expensive. It is not unusual for even a mainly residential paving contractor to have to pay $250,000.00 to $500,000.00 in equipment alone. So that where some of the costs to pave your driveway come from. I do want to let you all know this though, on average, the actual asphalt material is the most expensive part of the paving price. This is why it is so important for you to make sure your driveway is paved correctly the first time. I am sure you wouldn't want to spend thousands of dollars twice because you went with the low bid. You know the paving guy that working around the corner and has left over material or the one with the old unreliable paving machine. Daly Paving Company keeps our modern equipment well maintained. Asphalt Driveway Paving Price Range for 2009 (so far) For residential asphalt driveway paving, we usually charge by the square foot. Asphalt paving costs for simply laying down a 2 inch compacted thickness single layer of asphalt on an already installed VERY FINE GRADED and well compacted gravel base on a relatively large driveway with a good amount of area, the costs per square foot can be as low as $1.50. If you have a very small driveway, say under 500 square feet, chances are you may pay up words of $3 per square foot to have your asphalt driveway installed. We have to take into consideration our overhead when we are preparing your paving quote. More often than not, the same amount and type of paving equipment used to pave larger driveways is the same equipment required to pave small driveways. However, if you are willing to put in a little effort, there are a few ways you can lower your paving costs. If you are the type of person that understands, "you get what you pay for" and you are willing to spend extra to have a very strong, long lasting trouble free asphalt driveway, you can expect to pay anywhere from $3.00 to $5.00 per square foot for asphalt installation. Asphalt Driveway Base Preparation Costs When trying to figure out the cost for paving your driveway, you also need to take into consideration the base work that will be involved. The gravel base is your asphalt foundation. It is the real structure to any driveway and should be prepared as best as possible. Without a structurally sound foundation, your new asphalt driveway is sure to live a short life. Base work costs can also vary. Again, there are numerous factors to consider. As a rule of thumb, asphalt paving preparation work can range from .50 to 1.50 per square foot. It really depends on how much existing material needs to be removed (asphalt, concrete, Earth) and hauled off site and how much new gravel needs to be installed. Another consideration is the type of material being excavated. Organic material such as grass, trees and stumps need to be hauled off to different dump sites and generally include dumping fees. Areas that have ledge or large rocks also take more time to remove and may even require some speciality equipment like excavators and blasting contractors. In a Nut Shell At minimal asphalt driveway paving specifications that include a minimal amount of base work, the costs will range from $2.00 to $3.50 per square foot. For more asphalt and greater foundation work the costs can range from $3.50 to $6.50 per square foot. These prices are general and may not reflect your particular costs for paving your driveway.
