| Which asphalt driveway paving contractor are you going to choose? This is a bit lengthly but hopefully we'll help you keep your hair. Although Daly Paving Co. is a competent asphalt paving contractor, we realize that not everyone who visits our site is in our service area. Plus these tips are also useful for finding other types of competent home improvement contractors. To find your local paving contractor, it's always best to talk to your family, friends and neighbors that have had their driveway paved. They'll have all kinds of great info for you. Plus you'll be able to see the paving contractor's handy work first hand. Organizations like the Better Business Bureau and your local NPCA are where we all can find reputable property - home improvement contractors. Member companies like Daly Paving Co., are committed to providing customers with what they want honest workmanship. Now for some tips about hiring a residential paving contractor in CT. First make sure they are registered with the CT Dept. of Consumer Protection. All CT. home improvement contractors are required to purchase their license on an annual basis. It is a CT law. Just because you see numbers on various forms or signs it is best to call and make sure. You may also want to call your local Better Business Bureau (203) 269-2700 to check on their reputation. Next is insurance. Not only should the contractor have general liability coverage they also need to have Workmans Comp. This is extremely important because if one of the companies employees were to get hurt on your property and they are not properly insured that employee can come after you. Make sure all their work is guaranteed in writing and states what is covered and for how long. Unless there is no ground breaking (digging) involved, it is also a law that the company calls CBYD (Call Before You Dig) to mark out any possible underground utilities. You or the company may need to pull a town or state apron (entrance) permit. If your entrance is on a state road, for example Route 12 or Route 32, they are also required to be bonded with the state. OK you now have some basic knowledge about CT.'s requirements. Let's move on to the actual work. Here are some questions you should ask before you sign. Can you provide me with recent references? (We do not give out names or numbers but we will give you address's to drive by and look. That's what the BBB and the phone# above are for). Will you pull the required paving permit? Will you remove any and all debris (topsoil, clay, large rocks, grass, existing asphalt/concrete, etc.) from the site? Will you mark out the area before you start the prep work? Will the water run off away from the house? Will there be any trip hazards? (different height changes where you walk, garages, sidewalks, etc.) How much base material will you install? (This depends on you particular situation. As a rule of thumb you should have at least 6-8 inches of base whether its existing base or new base. If it is existing material the top 3-6 inches should be of a fine grade 3/4 to 1 1/4 inches max.) Will the gravel be installed and compacted in layers? (This is critical. Unless the newly prepared area is to sit for a month or so no new gravel was installed it is almost impossible to achieve 99% compaction of more than 6 inches of new material installed with the residential rollers we have today). How thick will the pavement be after compaction? (2 inch minimum with 6-8 inches of gravel base unless you opt for full depth paving (multiple layers of asphalt). What equipment is used to lay the asphalt? (If they say by hand, unless your area is inaccessible by a paving machine, say no thank you). What type of compaction equipment will be used? (At least a 1 1/4 ton vibratory roller and vibrating plate compactor should be used) What if it rains and the base is wet? (If the base has no standing water and it is solid it's OK to pave) Let's take a second and discuss this. Some properties can have high water tables or they may not drain water properly. If this is the case only time will heal. It can sometimes take weeks for the base to dry. If hot asphalt is placed on soaking wet or frozen gravel the steam that will be generated can cause small cracks underneath the top surface leading to premature failure. If you're anything like me you want it done yesterday. But wait untill it's dry. It's worth it in the long run. Ask the paving contractor who is responsible for the after paving landscaping of the edges? Most contractors will be happy to do this for you but it's not free. Will you block the new driveway entrance? These are general but you'll be surprised who knows what about proper paving techniques. We are a licensed paving contractor and we love talking about asphalt paving so if you have any questions please email or call us. Quality materials and workmanship, Now that a true bargain.
