Gravel Surfaces

Gravel for driveways and parking lots are found at local rock quarries around the world.
Chances are there is a local gravel yard in your very own town. Gravel is the starting
point for all driveways and parking lots. It is the foundation or base that pavements
lay on top of. Left unpaved to the elements, water will eventually takes its toll on a
gravel driveway or parking lot. Leaving you with a washed out deep ruts. Depending
on which way the surface water flows, you may even end up with your town's or
state's public works employee knocking at your door asking you to clean up the road
and pave the hill. They also tend to be very dusty especially on windy hot summer
days and require continued maintenance.

Most all of us have been on that dirt road following a vehicle in front of us creating
this huge dust storm. Well thats OK for the trails but for your driveway, not so good.
All that dust eventually lands on your flowers, vehicles and your home's or business's
exterior and it eventually tracks onto your floors. But it does serve its purpose and it
is very affordable.

Gravel driveways or parking lots are only as good as the gravel used and how it is
placed. For example, commonly found riverbank gravels are mostly rounded in nature
and are very sandy. This type of gravel can become very sloppy in rain and will not
compact well. Good compactable gravels are "man-made" by fracturing large boulders
down into smaller stones. This process causes the broken down stones to have angles
on most sides. These angles allow the stone to "lock" together tighter, therefore
keeping them more stable during rain storms and making them able to withstand a
vehicles weight without much displacement.

As an alternative to gravel and not as costly as hot mix asphalt, RAP is a good choice
to leave exposed for a long time. RAP is a ground up or milled Recycled Asphalt
Product. It holds up very well in rain and snow. Water seems to penetrate it well and
it does not turn to mud when wet. But it is more expensive than process gravel. The
cons are that it can be hard to find because not all local quarries accept old asphalt
which means they can't produce RAP. Also some states classified RAP as a potentially
hazardous material. They say that shedding water may carry potentially hazardous
material into nearby water sources. Some states do not consider RAP hazardous.

If you have a large driveway or parking lot and money is an issue but you really want
pavement, I suggest you start with a good solid gravel base and leave it exposed for
a year or so until you can afford the desired finish. It will cost you a little bit more to
have just the gravel base installed for now and having it paved later, but it will break
up the cost.

Please remember each driveway or parking lot is different and costs can vary greatly
depending on your particular situation, size and location of the project
.
